Road racing is fun

To culminate the 2013 USA Running Circuit (USARC) season, in February USA Track & Field announced its biggest single-event sponsorship in more than a decade when it launched the .US National Road Racing Championships. It’s the beginning of a three-year deal between USATF and Neustar, the administrator of the .US top-level domain, to initiate and grow a national-championship, mass-production road race.

Welcoming all runners of all abilities, the 2013 .US National Road Racing Championships will feature a 12-kilometer (km) championship race, 12 km masters championship race, 12 km community race, Nationwide Insurance 5 km family fun run and a half mile kids run. All finishers receive custom-made medals and can enjoy a family- and dog-friendly post-race expo at Oronoco Bay Park. The awards stage will feature entertainment and a relaxing atmosphere with a chance to run elbow with fellow fitness buffs as well as elite athletes.

The 12-km event will be the season-capping race to the USARC, a series of races that annually provides nearly $1 million in prize money to American runners. The .US National Road Racing Championships alone will provide a combined $100,000 prize purse for men and women.

With the addition of the masters championship, for the first time ever a USATF open national championship and masters championship, which will include ages 40 and over, will be held in a single race.

The .US National Road Racing Championships mark USATF’s first wholly owned-and-operated road race and will be overseen by USATF. And to engage the vast majority of the 14 million road racers in the U.S. not after prize money or an Olympic medal, the race will also embrace non-competitive fitness devotees to share in the excitement of a truly national running event.
